King Mackerel, Virginia mullet, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel

King Mackerel

As everybody read and heard last week, Steve and Karen will no longer be our eyes and ears for the weekly hook, line and sinker report. They will be missed. This chore has been passed on to me. My name is Captain John Carty. I have been fishing the Cape Fear area since 1972. I own and operate Affordable Fishing Charters, so I am in close touch with our local fishing on a daily basis. I will try to give an accurate report on surf, pier, inshore, and offshore fishing.

On the piers they are catching Virginia mullet, Flounder, Spanish Mackerel, a few small King Mackerel, Blue Fish, Spots and Croakers.

In the surf, people are catching Flounder, Puppy Drum, Virginia Mullet, Black drum, Blue Fish, small Croakers and sharks.

Inshore we are catching Red Drum, Black Drum, large Blue Fish (around the 10 pound range), Flounder, Spots, and Croakers.

Offshore we are catching Cobia, King Mackerel, Dolphin, and Mahi Mahi. The Cape Fear River and waterways are full of live bait (Menhaden), which is a good thing because it attracts large fish to come inshore and feed. There are a lot of Pin Fish and crabs that will peck your bait up very quickly so check your bait often.

Fish hard and it will pay off. Don’t forget father’s day is coming up. We have a great fishing resource in this area, and what would make a better fathers day gift than an offshore or inshore fishing charter.

Have a good time fishing.
Be safe and courteous.
